Modern Mill House Kitchen

Scope

The Nest + Renovation: Design, contractor liaison, paint + styling execution

This mill house kitchen had great bones—a big footprint and plenty of natural light—but a clunky layout and dated finishes held it back. The goal was a full transformation that felt modern but still honored the home's character, all while keeping the budget in check with strategic splurges.

Pre-fab drawer cabinets kept costs down, while custom touches elevate the space: a copper sink, handmade pulls from Etsy, and funky pendant lighting add personality and surprise. We kept the original tile floor and let it inform the countertop choice—Skara Brae quartz with warm grey veining and beautiful movement that carries up as the backsplash for a seamless, striking look. The fridge is fully integrated behind cabinet-matched panels for a clean line.

A new island transformed the workflow and added seating, and with a nearby pantry, we skipped upper cabinets in favor of floating shelves that keep things open and allow for seasonal styling. Deep window sills invite plants and light.

The standout detail is a custom wood-wrapped trim feature between kitchen and dining room. In a shotgun-style layout, it defines the spaces while adding warmth and a sense of grandeur—vertical lines that draw the eye up without sacrificing ceiling height the way faux beams would. Stained wood trim throughout keeps the space grounded and connected to the home's mill house roots.
