Husband's Closet Surprise

The Nest: Design, custom build + full DIY execution
This small walk-in was inefficiently planned—clothes crammed in, shoes tossed into a separate cabinet that blocked the window and any chance of a mirror. The space was basic grey with cold painted concrete floors, and it just wasn't working.
I spent time meticulously measuring every piece of clothing, categorizing by type and height, and designed a new shelving system that houses everything on one wall with a short wrap for shoes. Custom widths and heights for suits, pants, and shirts maximize every inch, and counted shoe shelves mean every pair is finally visible. The window is now unobstructed, leaving room for a large mirror and hooks (bench seating for luggage storage is still to come).
The design leans masculine but unexpected—bold painted stripes, a botanical wallpaper on the ceiling for texture, and black faux marble peel-and-stick tile on the floor. Existing paint tied it into the rest of the house and kept costs down. The entire project came in easily under $500 using repurposed lumber, wood-look shelves, and scraps on hand.
I did every part myself in four days while Joel was out of town: demo, tile installation, custom shelving design and build, painting those stripes (unexpectedly difficult), wallpaper, mirror, and a fixture swap. He came home to a completely transformed space.
